“The Hollars” is set to have it’s world premiere during the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. The movie is part of the festival’s Premieres selection. The first screening will be held on January 29 at the Eccles Theatre and for more information be sure to head over to the official website.
John Krasinski’s big-hearted family comedy takes a touching look at the ties that bind. Krasinski plays John Hollar, a frustrated graphic novelist anxiously awaiting the birth of his baby with girlfriend, Rebecca (Anna Kendrick). When his mother, Sally (Margo Martindale), is diagnosed with a brain tumor, John flies back home, where denial runs deep in the family tree. While his loving but fractured family pulls together to prepare Sally for surgery, John takes a second look at the life he left behind.
Krasinski, last seen at the Sundance Film Festival with his directorial debut Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (2009), takes a gentle approach to the dysfunctional Hollar clan, leavening the heart-tugging drama with inspired character-driven comedy. The large ensemble cast (including Richard Jenkins, Sharlto Copley, Josh Groban, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Mary Kay Place) gives the relationships a lived-in feeling, while Krasinski offers a warm, funny, warts-and-all look at the importance of family.
The festival runs from January 21-31.
Mary Elizabeth recently talked with Collider about her new project and also briefly mentioned “The Hollars” and working with John:
What was it like to be directed by John Krasinski for The Hollars?
WINSTEAD: It’s a small part. I was actually shooting The Returned, so I just went and showed up on his set for a couple of days, on a break from [the show]. It was a very small part, but super fun. He’s a sweetheart, and I was really happy just to get to work with him. He was just so full of excitement and passion. He was really lovely, and he wrote a really nice letter to me, asking if I would do it. I had met him before, but only briefly, so I didn’t actually know him. But, I was super happy to be amongst that really great cast. It was a great script on that, so it was fun.
John shared some exciting news earlier this month via his official twitter account. He tweeted he finished editing “The Hollars” on January 15. Let’s hope we will hear a release date soon.

Deadline is reporting that will star and direct “The Hollars“. Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins, and Margo Martindale are set to join him as cast.
The Office alum John Krasinski has lined up The Hollars as his next directing effort after helming his first feature, 2009?s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men — and he has enlisted Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins, and Margo Martindale to join him. Krasinski also will star in the lead as John Hollar, an aspiring NYC artist who takes his girlfriend (Kendrick) back to his Middle America hometown on the eve of his mother’s (Martindale) brain surgery. There he’s forced to navigate the crazy life he left behind as his dysfunctional family, high school pals, his father (Jenkins), and his over-eager ex flood back into his life ahead of the operation.
The pic is produced by Krasinski’s Sunday Night banner and scripted by James C. Strouse in what’s described as a blend of Steel Magnolias and Garden State. Tom Rice and Ben Nearn are producing for Sycamore Pictures, which recently produced The Way Way Back and Begin Again. Groundswell’s Michael London is also a producer. Sunday Night’s Allyson Seeger is exec producing alongside Strouse and Groundswell’s Janice Williams. Panorama is handling international sales and will put the project in front of buyers at Cannes. WME is handling domestic sales and reps Krasinski, who is also repped by attorney James Adams. Strouse is repped by ICM Partners. Jenkins and Martindale are repped by Gersh; CAA reps Kendrick.
